To relieve swelling and pain caused by rheumatic lesions, the doctor may prescribe Aertal – ointment, powder for suspension or medicine in the form of tablets. The tool belongs to the group of nonsteroidal drugs with pronounced anti-inflammatory effects.
It inhibits (slows down) the development of edema and excessive filling of blood vessels in the affected area (hyperemia), regardless of the cause of the process. Therefore, the drug is used to treat local inflammation, and in some cases – the main disease.
At what illnesses is the drug prescribed?
Aceclofenac, the active substance of the drug, significantly slows down the synthesis of prostaglandins, provoking the appearance and development of various kinds of inflammation. That is why the range of indications of the drug is quite extensive. In case of soft tissue rheumatism and rheumatoid arthritis, it is prescribed for pain relief and removal of the edema caused by the disease.
The preparation for the joints has a moderate antipyretic effect, however, it cannot be used as an independent means for churning high temperatures.
Medicines based on aceclofenac prevent premature depletion of cartilage tissue, as they stimulate the production of its cells (chondrocytes). They are used to treat various types of diseases of the spine and joints:
- deforming osteoarthrosis;
- shoulder periarthritis;
- lumbar lumbago (lumbago).
In complex therapy, an agent is prescribed to relieve pain with:
- ankylosing spondylitis;
- all types of arthritis.
The drug in the form of tablets and ointments is used in the treatment of inflammatory processes caused by injuries, including sports. Sometimes it is used as a remedy for toothache, however, it should be noted that after taking the pill the maximum concentration of the active ingredient is reached after 2.5–3 hours. In order to remove the acute pain, it is better to purchase a powder for the preparation of a suspension, since the drug in liquid form will act faster.
Acceptance of diluted with water powders or tablets of 100 mg is carried out 2 times a day with meals or immediately after it. Pain syndrome after taking the medicine usually disappears for 9–10 hours.
Method of application of the cream
The instructions for use Aertal ointment indicated that it is allowed to apply only on intact skin, and not more than 3 times a day. You can not intensively rub the sore area and cover it with a pressure bandage. You can only distribute the substance evenly with light massage movements, and then gently wrap the smeared place with a wide bandage or scarf.
A single dosage of 1.5% drug is 1.5-2 g, which corresponds to a portion the size of a pea or a narrow strip of ointment about 5 cm long.
The gel applied to the affected area is absorbed gradually, stimulating anti-inflammatory processes in the affected area. Due to the fact that the agent enters the circulatory system in a fairly low concentration, the risk of adverse effects on the gastrointestinal tract is minimized.
An ointment for osteochondrosis improves blood microcirculation in the capillaries, thereby starting the regeneration process in the intervertebral cartilage.
The drug helps relieve local pain and reduce swelling with bruises, sprains, or overstressing muscles, tendons and ligaments. It has been experimentally proven that the ointment can be successfully used to reduce skin redness during sunburn.
However, there are limitations in the use of the drug Aertal:
- The cream can not be used with the individual intolerance of the active ingredient or auxiliary substances.
- To avoid complications such as infection of the skin and soft tissues, the use of the tool should be excluded for the duration of the acute form of infectious diseases caused by the Varicella Zoster virus. These include chickenpox and herpes zoster.
Cream for external use usually does not cause skin irritation, with the exception of mild redness with increased sensitivity. But with the appearance of more serious symptoms – rash, puffiness and other signs of an allergic reaction – the use of the cream should be stopped.
The drug should be avoided in the eyes and mouth, so hands should be thoroughly cleaned not only before applying the ointment, but also after it, unless they themselves need treatment. To protect the smeared areas of the body from exposure to sunlight, they need something to cover.
Who is the drug contraindicated?
In addition to individual intolerance, medications containing Airtal should not be prescribed to patients in whom acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) provokes asthma attacks, an allergic rash, or severe runny nose. They are not recommended for diclofenac hypersensitivity.
The drug should not be taken in violation of hematopoietic function, gastritis in the acute stage and peptic ulcer 0, stomach disease.
Since no studies have been conducted to assess the safety of drugs during pregnancy and lactation, they are not prescribed to pregnant women and nursing mothers, as well as children under 18 years of age.
Contraindications to the cream are due to the presence of auxiliary components of the drug. One of the components of the ointment base is emulsified wax containing cetyl stearyl alcohol.
This substance in some patients causes contact dermatitis, due to an allergic reaction or hypersensitivity to sunlight.
In some cases, the drug can cause such side effects as:
- stomach upset;
- nausea and vomiting;
- provoke emotional instability;
- heart rhythm disorder;
- high blood pressure.
Therefore, medication can be made only if it has indications, solely on prescription and under his supervision. This is especially true for patients with renal and hepatic insufficiency, as well as various gastrointestinal diseases. Exceeding the recommended dose increases the negative effect and leads to the breakdown of the nervous and digestive systems.
First aid for overdose is washing the stomach, taking activated carbon and other adsorbents.
Compatibility with other medicines
- The simultaneous use of drugs and ointments, which include aceclofenac, and other anti-inflammatory drugs leads to more frequent occurrence of adverse reactions such as upset the digestive system.
- If the patient is taking hypoglycemic drugs, it is necessary to constantly check the blood glucose level, since in combination with Airtal it may significantly increase or decrease.
- To prevent the occurrence of bleeding while taking this tool and anticoagulants, you need to constantly monitor blood clotting.
- Interaction with drugs used in chemotherapy, can lead to an increase in the concentration of the latter and enhance their toxic effects. Therefore, the time between taking these types of drugs should be at least 24 hours.
- Aertal reduces the effectiveness of diuretic and antihypertensive (lowering blood pressure) drugs, and its own effect weakens while taking it along with acetylsalicylic acid.
- It can enhance the nephrotoxic effect of cyclosporine, which is sometimes used to treat severe rheumatoid arthritis.
Drug efficacy: reviews of patients and doctors
According to data obtained from various forums and independent sites, patient feedback on the effectiveness of the drug in most cases is positive, although some of them complained about side effects from the gastrointestinal tract. A number of patients noted a positive trend in the treatment:
- swelling after injury;
- pain of unexplained nature in the foot;
- swelling and severe joint pain in rheumatoid arthritis;
- mobility disorders of the knee joints;
- the effects of excessive loads and injuries sustained during sports activities;
- headache associated with cervical osteochondrosis.
Reviews of doctors also indicate complaints of individual patients to violations of the digestive system, flatulence, heartburn after 3-4 days of taking pills. As a result, sometimes it is necessary to reduce the dosage of the drug or completely cancel it.
But the effectiveness of the drug is manifested only with prolonged admission, for which prescribe a course of at least 15 days. Therefore, doctors recommend to adhere to the established treatment regimen, and to reduce the negative effects of additional prescribed medications that normalize the work of the gastrointestinal tract.
If the patient does not have an allergy to the main and auxiliary substances, the exact observance of medical recommendations will completely eliminate or minimize all unpleasant sensations.
Cost and Substitutes
The manufacturer of the drug under the trade name Aertal is JSC Gedeon Richter (Hungary). The rather high price of the drug (about 350 rubles) forces some to turn to cheaper domestically produced drugs, the active ingredient of which is also aceclofenac: Diclotol, Infenak, Asenak, Zerodol, etc. According to some patients, these drugs are not inferior to the original drug, but many consider them less effective.
The list of contraindications and side effects for all these tools is the same.
