For the first time this luxury business sedan was shown to the world back in 1985. Since then, as many as five of his generations have changed, and the last in the back of the CS2 has been on sale in the native Japanese market since the fall of 2014.
It is still quite fresh, so the official teasers about the upcoming update in 2019, most likely, hint not at the birth of a full generation, but simply at a cosmetic preening to update the model and unify it with the recently accomplished significant restyling sister – Acura RLX.
In general, the situation with this Japanese legend is quite interesting and unusual. Most often, all automakers first launch their new products for the home market, and later, often with a changed name, prepare them for export.
Here, the opposite is true: despite the fact that the Legend appeared chronologically earlier, in recent years, it is the popular Acura that has been brought to mind first, and then the mother model has been customized for it.
Well, to that available quite logical and clear explanation. Acura RLX since its release shows a steady growth in sales in the European market and a systematic expansion of the geography of expansion, the Legend is … Legend, unfortunately, is losing its position – in 2017 less than half a thousand of its copies were sold.
Perhaps the Japanese simply became disillusioned with the format itself. Perhaps the problem is in beating it in all respects Lexus GS.
Does the future restyling fix the situation? There is every reason to believe that yes, because Acura’s hybrid hasn’t yet appeared, so the Legend is the only possible option for fans of Honda’s creative work to get an eco-friendly car of this class.
Externally, little will change, but even what will be done will give the car a much more spectacular and modern look. The LEDs in the headlights will be located differently, and in general, the whole form of the front optics will be much more interesting. The grille, as well as the rear light and both bumpers will be changed.
By design, the body itself will be left unchanged, which is not surprising, because the last generation shows very good characteristics in this matter. It is 55% composed of high-strength steel alloys, which made it possible to increase the torsional rigidity by 46% and bending – by 52% compared to its predecessor.
But do not think that such a powerful body somehow interferes with the aerodynamics – the model can be greatly facilitated due to the fact that a number of exterior body panels, as well as the entire hood, are made of lightweight aluminum.
There is every reason to believe that the salon will undergo even less renovations than the exterior. What is not so bad, after all, the last version is very good in its refined and thoughtful style.
It seems to be promising new front seats, which will add adjustments and options, as well as expand the list of complete sets with options for combinations of finishing materials for another couple of positions.
In the back, it is expected that one of the configurations will also leave the option of dividing the back sofa into two full-fledged seats with a multifunctional armrest between them and autonomous climate control, as well as a number of other functions in the end of the central tunnel.
What it will be specifically – while the Japanese are smiling politely and advised to wait for the next car dealership to meet firsthand. In the meantime, it remains to hope only for possible leaks from insiders.
The only thing that is known for sure is that now the Honda Legend will acquire a system of semi-autonomous driving, which is logical, for today it is difficult to imagine a flagship of at least one brand without this functionality.
A sensor with assistants and multimedia control with 10 speakers, as well as a station for gadgets will be exactly the same as in Acura, and a high central tunnel will be equipped in the upper part with a set of adjustment buttons with well-thought-out ergonomics. By the way, the gearshift lever here will likewise be completely abandoned in favor of the push-button gears.
As already noted, the top Honda sedan will be offered exclusively in the form of a hybrid, and its parameters, as well as other technical features of the updated model will be as follows:
- a 3.5-liter six-cylinder engine works in the company of three electric motors at once, and develops power up to 380 hp;
- four-wheel drive;
- independent front double wishbone and multi-link independent rear suspension;
- disc brakes and front and rear;
- length – 5.03 m, width – 1.89 m, height – 1.48 m, wheelbase – 2.85 m, ground clearance – 14.5 cm.
- anti-roll bar.
Well, it is obvious that with all the indicators for this large sports sedan, things are pretty good, but given that the Lexus has a hybrid in the GS trim levels, and its latest update boasts not the only engine option, the Legend will have to withstand serious competition.
The new model will be compared not only with the countrymen, but also with the sixth Audi or the fifth BMW series. If we recall that classmates, including the Jaguar XF, as well as the Mercedes E-class, the situation begins to cause serious concern. Although, the price of this premium Japanese looks much more attractive – only 70.74 million IEN.
